Korean Language Program FAQs

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about KCI’s Korean Language Program.

Q: I have studied Korean before at another institution/school. How do I know which class is the right level for me?

A: If you have studied Korean before, we strongly recommend you to come in for a placement test in order for us to know which class is the best fit for you. The placement test consists of reading and writing, and/or speaking sections depending on your Korean proficiency. All tests are held online and it generally takes about 15-20 minutes but there is no specific time limit. Please contact Hyunji Kim (hyunji@koreancentersf.org) to schedule your placement test.

Q: I basically know the Korean alphabet and a few words/phrases. Which is the best class for me?

A: If you know how to read the Korean alphabet and know a few basic words/phrases but cannot understand the meaning, we recommend that you take Beginning 1 class. If, on the other hand, you have no previous experience with Korean, Korean Alphabet is the right class for you.

Q: I have a very irregular work/school schedule. And I know I’ll be missing couple classes. Should I go ahead and register?

A: We understand that everyone in the Bay Area lives a busy life. And our classes are scheduled once a week in the evening to accommodate the general population here in the San Francisco Bay Area. However, the King Sejong Institute (KSI) has an attendance policy that states students must attend at least 70% of the class in order to pass the class. That equivalates to 9 out of 13 sessions for Korean Alphabet class and 11 out of 15 classes for our regular courses. If you know that you’ll be missing 3 or more classes before the semester starts, we strongly encourage you to contact us and/or go with private tutoring instead of taking the Korean Language Program.

Q: I’ll be missing the first day of class. How do I contact my instructor to let her/him know?

A: Due to instructors’ schedule changes and sometimes unseen circumstances, our instructor assignment can change even a couple days before the first day of class. We ask you to contact our Korean Language Program Coordinator (Hyunji@koreancentersf.org) to let her know of your first-day absence.

Q: I took a class at KCI two or more semesters ago. Can I go ahead and register for the next level class?

A: Welcome back to KLP at Korean Center! We’re so glad that you have decided to join us again. If you took a class here at Korean Center two or more semesters ago, we ask you to take the placement test again. This is to ensure that your Korean is at the right level to take the next class.

Q: I want to drop the class before the class begins. What is your refund policy?

A: If you want to drop the class before the first day of class, we give you a 100% refund for the tuition except for the new student registration fee, which is non-refundable. Please contact Hyunji to receive the refund request form.

Q: I want to drop the class after x week(s) of class. What is your refund policy?
A: Please refer to our refund policy here.
Q: I think I got placed into the wrong class because the materials are too easy/hard for me. Can I transfer to a differen level class?

A: It is possible to transfer to a different level class depending on the class availability. But we’ll try our best to place you into a class that is the right level for you. Please contact Hyunji (hyunji@koreancentersf.org) to request a class transfer.

Q: I failed my previous course. What are the possible options for me?
A: If you failed your previous course, you can take the same course with a 50% applied discount towards tuition or take the placement test and pass with a 90% or above. Note that the placement test to skip a failed class will be more detailed and rigorous than the regular placement test.
Q: Are textbooks included in the tuition?

A: No, the textbooks are NOT INCLUDED in the tuition. Students are required to purchase the course textbook(s) and/or a workbook depending on the class. They generally range from $15-$30. You can either purchase on your own online or pay/pick-up at the center during the designated time of the day. Q: Are there homework for each class? What is the amount of weekly homework?
A: All homework are determined by the instructors, thus it varies from class to class. But all homework amount should be bearable for once a week class schedule.
Q: Can I get the tuition receipt for my company’s reimbursement?

A: Yes, we give a detailed receipt to those who request it. Please contact Hyunji to have your detailed receipt requested.

Q: Is Korean Center wheelchair accessible?

A: Unfortunately, most of our classrooms are not wheelchair accessible due to our building’s structure. Please contact Hyunji if you have any further questions.
