Overview
The Teen Summit Program, hosted by the Korean Center in partnership with the Asian Art Museum and sponsored by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea, is designed to empower and develop young leaders in the Korean community. This one day program aims to provide students from grades 8-12 with opportunities to enhance their leadership skills and foster personal growth. Through a combination of hands-on workshops, engaging lectures, and discussions, the program equips students with the knowledge and tools needed to be an effective leader.
Fall 2024 Teen Summit Speakers & Activities
CYJO
Born in 1974 and based in Miami, CYJO is a Korean American artist who primarily works with lens-based media. Her acclaimed series “KYOPO” (2004-2009) and “Mixed Blood” (2010-2017) blend photographic and narrative portraits, exploring themes of culture, immigration, and identity. Through collaboration, CYJO’s projects reveal the intricate connections between ancestry, citizenship, and personal journeys, offering diverse perspectives on the human experience. Having lived in urban centers like the DC Metro Area, NYC, Florence, Beijing, and Miami, CYJO’s work explores categorization and the evolving identities of individuals and places within cultural frameworks and social landscapes.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including: The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery (Washington, D.C.), Asia Society Texas Center (Houston), Japanese American National Museum (Los Angeles), Venice Architecture Biennale (Venice), Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing), Minsheng Art Museum (Shanghai), Museum of Contemporary Art (Chengdu), Today Art Museum (Beijing), T. Art Center (Beijing), Liang Dian Design Center (Beijing), China Millennium Monument Museum of Digital Arts (Beijing), CFCCA (Manchester), Dalian Museum (Dalian), The Art Atrium (London) and The Korea Society (NYC). Her work has been featured in numerous publications and broadcast including A+A Magazine, La Repubblica, Slate, Conveyor Magazine, Stern, Vanity Fair, designboom, ELLE Korea, Eloquence Magazine, Global Times, Loeil De La Photographie, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times, Huffington Post, NBC News, CBS News and PBS Sunday Arts News.
CYJO’s talk will explore identity and cultural narratives through art, featuring works like “KYOPO” and “Mixed Blood” that examine the complexities of ethnicity, nationality, and life experiences. The artist will discuss her transition from fashion to art, using photography, video and narratives as primary mediums, and how her work has evolved using varied mediums and collaborating with thecreativedestruction.

Created by the V&A and touring the world, Hallyu! The Korean Wave includes nearly 200 objects and artworks that illustrate the limitless flow of creativity powering the world’s biggest, fastest-growing contemporary cultural wave from Asia.
